Our Caterham 7 High Level LED Third Brake Light enhances the look of your car whilst adding a valuable safety aspect to your Caterham 7. LED Third brake lights are proven to reduce the reaction time of a driver in a following vehicle and considerably reduce their stopping distance.
A difference in reaction time of just 0.2 seconds at 75 mph translates into 21 feet extra braking distance for the cars behind. This can literally be the difference between life and death.
This JAL kit is available with various size clamps (32, 38 or 45mm) and 1.5m of wire to connect directly to your existing brake light circuit. This is a 5 minute upgrade and is easily one of the best safety modifications for your Caterham 7.
An optional Paint Pen is available to paint the P-Clip gloss black to match your roll bar.

Excellent product – makes you feel a lot safer driving the Caterham knowing youāve got much improved high level brake light visibility at the rear. I think the product and installation might be improved a little if the outer insulation material of the wire was a little more flexible, with a circular profile and in gloss black (rather than matt dark grey). That way, it would be a little easier to route tidily around the roll bar and also match the colour of the roll bar better (which is often gloss black on the Caterham 7). Very good product indeed – feels a lot safer driving knowing youāve got good brake light illumination at the rear. Easy to install too (if you have the LED sub-loom already fitted). All I would say is that the outer insulation for the wiring is quite hard and inflexible. Would prefer if this was a little more flexible and preferably in black gloss (to match the roll bar better). Also, the outer wire has flat sides. Would be easier to route around the roll bar and hide under tape if it was a round profile. All in all though, a great product at a good price. Thanks very much!

An excellent product and, in my opinion, a very useful safety addition for any Caterham. I like the style and design of the light too. Most drivers in modern day bigger cars are sitting higher up where their eye-line is not automatically drawn to the low-level rear light clusters on Caterhams. This addition increases the chances of the driver behind seeing the Caterham in front braking meaning they can react quicker reducing the chances of collision.
I also purchased the additional black paint pen for the P-clip and it definitely makes a neater finish to the installed product – I even painted the bolt head too for the complete black look – matches the black roll bar perfectly. The only thing I’d say about the paint pen is that it can leave a slightly tacky feel so I sprayed the p-clip and bolt-head with clear-coat to ensure a durable blemish-free finish.
Fitting was straightforward and the video on the web-site was an excellent aid. It took me a little while to find the brake light wiring connector in the chassis loom but that’s because I did too good a job of hiding it when I carried out my Caterham kit-build. Personally, I found it easier to remove the off-side rear wheel to carry out a neat finish to the wiring but this is not essential – I have a rear-exit exhaust so this made access slightly tighter on my car.

This is basically a small red LED ‘searchlight’ which is intensely bright and will certainly help my Caterham be seen by following vehicles when braking. Its also very well made being both well-finished and sturdy.
Neither of the P-clips supplied, one large and one small, fitted my roll bar which has a single 38mm diameter diagonal strut, but Doug got one to me in a couple of days which fits perfectly. *(Please note – 38mm p-clips now available as standard – JAL)
My car, which is a 2003 Roadsport, didn’t have the high-level brake light sub-loom fitted as shown in the installation video, but these are available directly from Caterham at a modest cost. I assume that more recent models have them as standard.

Like most purchasers you’ll have trawled Blatchat and deliberated options. Ultimately preferred alternative to the adapted LED rain-light option, now legitimised by being the Caterham Academy required race brake light (albeit two of them) and sold by them. Plug and play with no need for anything but connectors (no resistors in-line). Check your loom – my ’95 model uses male bullet connectors with female Lucas-type nodes (not the Econoseal connectors of later Caterhams, or the contemporary connectors in the excellent JAL video). But the principle is the same – two male bullets crimped-on, and two four-way female nodes directly connected into the supply/return to the rear off-side rear light unit – black-to-black; red-to-green/purple. Job done. Super bright, quite directional, aesthetically pleasing, with a red lens and tear-drop body. Better price than Caterham parts too! Great communication and dedication to customer satisfaction – Doug threw in a couple of bullet connectors. Fettle the P-clip into an ‘O-clip’ to seat the tail of the light tight to the bracket/rollbar – I painted the clip black and used two suitable rubber grommets to sleeve the bolt holes in the clip tight to the bolt. Got stuck on an A road waiting to turn right against oncoming traffic, kept my foot on the brake and am convinced it made me more visible for passing traffic from behind.

The light was very easy to fit and is much brighter than my original high level brake light.
I was initially apprehensive about losing rear visibility if I mounted it on the cross over point of the rollbar but Doug suggested trying it in a couple of other locations and even offered me a refund if I was not satisfied (and had not used the light). Iām happy to report that visibility is not adversely affected with the light on the top of the cross over point of the rollbar.
